Disc golf harkens back to the days of throwing the frisbee out on the school courtyard and playing object golf where people would try to hit a pole or a tree with a trash can lid. The sport may have officially started about 60 years ago, but the art of “throwing stuff at stuff” has always appealed to the masses.
Whether you’re an old school player who used to take frisbees out to the courses or you’re the next generational talent who is 10 years old and can already throw 400 feet, disc golf is a sport for everyone.
Here are four great reasons to start playing disc golf right now!
1. Disc Golf is Family Time
Disc golf is a great way for families to spend time together.
The year 2020 brought an incredible spike to the disc golf scene. Why? Because when everyone was quarantined and working or completing school from home, having a few moments outside to ride bikes and walk the dog became treasured moments.
The more people ventured out to parks, the more they saw these strange individuals throwing discs at baskets. Intrigued by the sport, families realized they could come together with just a few discs each and have fun while creating cherished memories.
There is a lot of negativity to look back on in the year 2020, but because of disc golf, countless families can say they now have wonderful memories with their loved ones. Whether it’s laughing at someone accidentally throwing directly into the water or watching your child find a potential new passion, disc golf will forever hold a special place in many people’s hearts.
While 2021 may not (yet) have the wild inconsistencies that forever made 2020 an infamous year, now is the best time for families to spend time together. Disc golf can help with that.
2. Disc Golf is Affordable
Not only is disc golf great for families to spend time together, but it is also ridiculously affordable. While you can certainly buy new discs in premium plastics with custom stamps for upwards of $25 each, this is not required to enjoy disc golf.
There are many stores that sell used discs ranging from $1 to $10 depending on their condition and type of plastic. (Discussion on plastics will be shared in another post!)
Therefore, a family of four can spend $4 to $40 on four discs and throw them for months. This helps disc golf to be more affordable than other sports that typically requires more equipment at higher costs.
Disc golf can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. There is absolutely no correlation between spending more money and becoming a better player.
3. Disc Golf is Safe Exercise
Disc golf is one of the safest sports you and your family can play while getting incredible exercise.
Most disc golf courses are between 4,500 and 5,500 feet. Some beginner courses start at the 3,000-foot mark and incredibly difficult courses are over 7,000 feet long. But regardless of the length of the course, you and your family will walk a few miles without even realizing it!
While it does require good form to throw the disc far and well, most people can naturally throw discs well enough to avoid doing something catastrophic to their shoulder or elbow. Therefore, the risk of injury is incredibly low.
Do disc golfers deal with injuries? Yes, but those are typically due to the wear and tear of playing after several years.
Disc golf is a low impact sport that helps your body get the exercise it needs.
4. Disc Golf is Exciting
Disc golf is healthy, affordable, and a great way to spend time with family. But above all, disc golf is exciting!
The feeling you get from hearing the sound of chains when you make your first birdie putt has little to no competition. Additionally, being able to try out so many discs and find what works for you is part of the fun in the journey.
As you develop your game and grow in the sport, you will meet many people who will lend a helping hand and provide you with great tips and advice. Disc golf clubs around the world are all about bringing people together and cultivating healthy competition. The disc golf community is an integral part of the sport and helps in developing an exciting atmosphere.
The year 2020 taught us many things, one of which is that disc golf is for everyone! There is a spot in everyone’s life for family time and even a little exercise.
If adding excitement and cherished memories are important to you and your family, consider playing disc golf! It is an excellent way for the whole family to get outside, enjoy some fresh air, and savor one another’s company.
