Information

This photograph from the 1899 Memoirs of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum of Polynesian Ethnology and Natural History shows an exhibit of 24 ulu maika stones. In an ancient Hawaiian sport by the same name, athletes rolled these stones for distance down a special course called the kahuamaika. This exhibit clearly displays the variation in size and material from which these stones could be carved.
