Photo of a Rugby Match, South Africa vs. Cambridge (1906)
source: Wikimedia Commons
A black and white photograph shows two rugby teams in a match. The ball is airborne just out of reach, and a group of players are reaching up to catch it. The eye is drawn to a player in white (Cambridge) in front of the group, who has jumped with arms stretched upward but has missed the ball.
This photograph of a rugby match was published in the French newspaper L’illustration in 1906. The teams pictured here are Cambridge (white) and the South Africa Springboks (black), who won the match. At this time, the official rules for rugby football had been established only 35 years prior, in 1871.
